About the  "Torn Paper"  Series

I wanted to address abstraction with photography, which seems to be a medium much better at depicting realistic things. It occurred to me to use newspaper which has such interesting patterns of text and photos. Tearing it into strips and working in black and white made it seem abstract for me and I began to use the strips to make compositions.

While one might say strips of newspaper are still specific and recognizable as what they are, I like to think of the strips somewhat in the way that I think of Jackson Pollock's streams of paint. One sees them as paint, but together they form an abstract whole.
